The Costume For Toddlers

Toddler costumes are particularly important because your little one is just starting to get to that "dress up" age where they love to feel special and like part of the crowd. Particularly for kids with older siblings, your toddler is going to love the thrill of the trick or treat festivities and transforming him or herself into an animal, movie character or alter-ego. The costume you choose should say something about your child and should be something your little one will like. After all, no matter how big or small, there's probably still that one costume you fondly remember.

Ideally, a costume will be comfortable, not too hot, not too cold and easy to undo for changing time. There shouldn't be any appendages that will irritate the baby or trip the toddler. Remember that material-wise cotton is durable and comfortable, when compared to polyester, and plush fabrics are snuggly for the baby, but not necessarily so if you live in muggy Florida. Be sure to look over the costume design for anything that might be pulled off or choked on.

Avoid buying masks or using face paints on your baby and if you plan on participating in a trick or treat romp around the neighborhood to show off your newborn, then be sure you and your stroller are highly visible with reflective tape and light colors. Most importantly, check the label to be sure the outfit is flame retardant and machine washable! Now that you know the safety tips, it's time to think more creatively about finding the best infant and toddler costumes.

At www.onestepahead.com you will find some of the cutest toddler costumes and the ideal costume for your baby. For the active, climbing baby, the costume you're sure to love is "baby gorilla" for 12/18 month old babies. The furry jumpsuit has a gorilla head attached but keeps the face open so your baby can see and the non-slip tread on the slipper feet prevents falls. Equally adorable is the "baby lobster," which is a unique bunting for newborns and babies who aren't walking yet, and it slips off easily for changing time too!

If you're looking for a costume that exudes irony, then go for the "Lil' Stinker Skunk" for baby. With its soft plush material, cushiony tail, matching Romper and pants, newborns to 25 pounders will be more than comfortable. Another good costume for babies who aren't walking yet is the "baby pea in a pod," which fits babies from birth to 9 months and is adorable for twins! Lastly, there's a sale on the adorable "Hershey Kiss" child costume design this year, marked from $16.95 down to $6.95, and is ideal for infants who are 15-26 lbs. or toddlers who are 25-36 lbs. This outfit comes with a padded lame tunic and cap, as well as the option of buying a stretchy cotton/spandex crisp white mock turtleneck t-shirt and fitted waistband pants for layering.

There are also some new costume design concepts over at Annies Costumes. For instance, the 3-in-1 kids costumes give you a better bang for your buck, allowing kids to transform their costume into three different looks for one price! For $49.95, your son can dress as a cowboy with vest, star and scarf, an Indian with a feathered headband, collar with bib and belt with loin cloth, or Peter Pan with cape, hat, belt and boot tops. In addition to the costume, the set also comes with a light brown shirt and dark brown pants and comes in Toddler (Size 2-3), Small (Size 4-6), Medium (Size 8-10), Large (Size 12-14), and XLarge (Size 14-16). Girls may love the devil/Spanish dancer/Minnie Mouse combo. Another new concept is the functional costume that holds candy too! So far the only option is the T-Rex "candy catcher" toddler costumes or the kangaroo with a pouch, but there are bound to be more in the coming years.

Today's Tip On Halloween

Or perhaps you're looking for fun Halloween party games for teens. Don't feel daunted in your quest for "the cool factor" with this age group, as they're a lot easier to impress than you may think! One mother said she sent out a story starter with the party invitations and asked the kids to write a creepy ending to be judged at the event. She said the stories were so funny, gross and fascinating that they reread them each year! Given the popularity of YouTube and viral videos, and how tech savvy kids are these days, you may also want to have a "Blair Witch Project Style Film Festival," asking each kid to write and film a five-minute horror movie to be screened at the party. Or if you'd like, you can make this a party activity by assembling old costume accessories and writing down movie ideas, letting kids pick out of a hat. Give each team 20 minutes to film their own movie as the other kids do another activity, waiting for their turn. Halloween hide-h-go-seek can be terrifying when the seeker is dressed up like a horrifying monster, creepy music is playing in the background and those caught have to lay on the floor like vampires in their coffins. Board games are always a howling good time for teenagers as well.
